THE CLUB

  • Q1. Are there membership fees?
  • A1. Yes, the annual membership fee is currently R3000 for junior rowers (R250 per month)and a coaching fee to be determined by the coach.& R2400 for senior and master rowers(R200 per month). Fees for racing (registration, travel, etc.) are additional and vary for each regatta.
  • Q2. Are there any other requirements to be a member?
  • A2. All rowers and coxswains must be able to swim at least 100 metres and tread water for at least one minute. There are no other requirements for membership.
  • Q3. Is attendance mandatory?
  • A3. Regular practice attendance is not mandatory, but encouraged. Practices with race lineups prior to regattas are considered high-priority, and will be scheduled to best suit each other’s availability.
  • Q4. What about equipment use?
  • A4. We currently use boats and other major equipment items from the national and provincial federations but are working towards getting our own. Rowers and coxswains need to bring only personal items, such as a water bottle, towel, socks and extra clothes.
  • Q5. Are there any social events?
  • A5. Yes, there are frequent social gatherings throughout the year. Social activities are  part of our club life.
  • Q6. Is there any participation in regattas?
  • A6. Yes, we regularly participate in area regattas in the summer and autumn. Those races are not mandatory. We try to enter as many boats as possible, with the goal of having as many members as possible entered in race events.
  • Q7. Are indoor workouts available?
  • A7. The club has got ergometers . The use of the ergos is included in the annual membership. However, most of the practices throughout the year will be on the water.
  • Q8. What are the facilities like?
  • A8. The club rows on the Swartkops River at Redhouse Port Elizabeth. The river is tidal and one can row for 4 kms in one direction and 3kms in the other direction.For an extremely long row one could row to the neighbouring village Swartkops but this is generally only possible in high .The club operates out of a container at the Redhouse Yacht Club premises boatshed in Redhouse.
  • Q9. Does the club offer sculling and/or sweep rowing?
  • A9. The club offers both types of rowing
  • Q10.What do my dues cover?
  • A 10.Dues cover: the use of the equipment,use of motor boat , repairs and maintenance and admin. costs.
  • Q11. Are there any other fees?
  • A11. There is an annual registration fee with the federation ROWSA (Rowing South Africa) for all rowers who want to compete. See regatta information for regatta costs.
